Every engine needs clean fluid to run. That’s why John Deere has included oil filters on its diesel engines beginning with the PowerTech engines.
The PowerTech engines use a two-stage filtration system: the primary filter removes particles larger than 15 microns and the secondary filter removes particles down to two microns in size.
Examine the hydraulic oil filter to ensure that it is not damaged. If it is, replace the filter with a new one before continuing.
Remove the top of the hydraulic tank by pulling on it until it releases from the tank. This will reveal the internal parts of the tank and allow you to inspect for any problems. Remove any obstructions inside the tank. If necessary, drain the hydraulic fluid and replace it with fresh liquid.
Check all of the hoses and fittings on or near the hydraulic oil filter for leaks or damage. Replace any damaged components before proceeding.
Check all of the hydraulic system’s valves and adjust them according to John Deere’s specifications so that they are completely open or completely closed — anything in between reduces flow through the valves and limits your excavator’s performance.

A hydraulic pump is a mechanical device that converts mechanical power into hydraulic energy. It generates flow with enough power to overcome pressure induced by the load at the pump outlet. When a hydraulic pump operates, it creates a vacuum at the pump inlet which allows atmospheric pressure to force liquid from the reservoir into the inlet line to the pump. The pump then forces this liquid out of the outlet to system components such as motors or cylinders.
Hydraulic pumps are used in hydraulic drive systems and can be hydrostatic or hydrodynamic. A hydrostatic pump combines a fixed-displacement gear pump with a variable-displacement axial piston motor. A hydrodynamic pump uses an engine-driven gear to produce flow continuously, regardless of the pressure at the outlet.
This is entirely possible the machine has been sitting for a while and the hydraulic pump is just not working.
You will want to take it to your local Deere dealer and have them run a diagnostic test on the machine.
They will be able to check all of your hydraulics, fluids etc so you know what is going on with your excavator.

There is a problem with the john deere 790 excavator hydraulic pump control valve. The excavator starts and runs fine but after a period of time (5 minutes) the excavator will shut down. The pump control valve has a pressure relief valve that opens at a certain PSI (220 I think) to let excess oil bypass back to the tank. If this happens while you are operating the machine you will lose all hydraulics. To fix it first you must drain the oil out of the tank and then take off the top cap and clean out all of the fluff (rust, dirt, etc.).
It is also recommended that you replace the o-rings on both sides of the cap. We did not do this and had to do it again later. While you are in there check that the valve itself moves freely in its seat.
The black plastic cover on top of your pump control valve can be removed by removing several small screws or even better unscrewing it with a quarter (be carefull not to drop anything down into your hydraulics system).

I am currently working with a John Deere 790 excavator. I noticed that the hydraulic motor (the engine) is not functioning correctly. The engine does not run smoothly and does not start consistently.

When I turn the ignition key and switch on the ignition, it is able to start normally and do normal work. But after a certain period of time, it will stop suddenly while running and won’t start again until later. I have checked all the circuits and electrical components of the machine but they all seem to be working properly without any defects or damage.
